Daniel Bar-Tal, on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, before and after October 7, 2023

In conversation with James Liu and Veronica Hopner | Political Psychology

The Israel-Palestinian conflict is one of the most well-known and polarizing issues that has impacts on societies, and institutions beyond Israel, and Palestine.

This interview with prominent social scientist Daniel Bar-Tal, Professor Emeritus, School of Education, Tel Aviv University, focused on the situation in Israel and Palestine following the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, and the subsequent war in Gaza. Interviews such as this are an academic inquiry drawing on the expert analysis of a scholar-activist, grounded in research and theory. As such an analysis, Bar-Tal explains the causes of this war, its context, its process, the contribution of each side to its escalation, and its effects on the possibilities of peaceful conflict resolution between Israeli Jews and Palestinians.

He describes the current situation as governed by considerations of realpolitik, contestations over what defines antisemitism, and whether Israeli conduct in Gaza constitutes genocide or ethnic cleansing. This interview enables the application of Bar-Tal’s systematic and holistic Theory of Intractable Conflict to the current crisis to interrogate how ethos of conflict, collective memory, and collective emotional orientation dynamically interconnect to form a culture of conflict. But also, how these elements can also be addressed for solutions to enable peaceful resolutions.

Rachel Fink schreibt auf Haaretz über die heutige (22.10.2024) Konferenz „Preparing to Resettle Gaza“,- in Anwesenheit verschiederner israelischer Minister (Regierungsmitglieder!) – hier ein Auszug:

„On Monday morning, hundreds of settlement-supporting Israelis, many with their gaggle of young children in tow, headed down to the southern border for a special Sukkot-themed celebration. Over two days, they gathered in temporary huts to discuss permanent resettlement. Of the Gaza Strip, that is. „Every single sliver of it,“ as one speaker declared.

Hers was just one of a slew of comments jockeying for the title of most incendiary statement made during the event. „We will sun ourselves on the sandy beaches of the Gazan coastline,“ another contender proclaimed. Conference organizer Daniella Weiss has bigger plans. ‚We know from the Bible that the real borders of Greater Israel are the Euphrates and the Nile,‘ she said to the audience, who cheered enthusiastically. ‚And the sooner we make this a reality, the better.‘„

ToRoll: Materialized holiness is a collaborative research project to examine the production of ritually pure Torah scrolls as an extraordinary codicological, theological, and sociological phenomenon of Jewish scribal culture. The project includes the digital edition of selected scribe literature from antiquity until the
modern era, paleographical analyses of the letter crownlets and particular forms of lettering, analyses of the inks and the materials used for writing medieval Torah scrolls of European provenance, and qualitative interviews with contemporary scribes.

A primary objective of the project is to further integrate central research fields of Jewish Studies into the inter- and transdisciplinary research discourses, and to open them up for methodological approaches with the help of the Digital Humanities. For processing new research Questions, the project combines the academic expertise from Jewish Studies with the methods of material research, the social sciences, and art history, as well as with the future-oriented approaches of information technology.

Das Ökumenische Zentrum für Befreiungstheologie Sabeel, gegründet 1989, hat 2023 in Jerusalem nach vier Jahren Arbeit einen Text vorgelegt, der die weltweite Auseinandersetzung mit der Frage des Antisemitismus – auch in der eigenen palästinensischen Gesellschaft – zum Thema hat. Der vorliegende Text ist ein lesenswerter Beitrag, der auch in der interessierten deutschsprachigen Welt zur Kenntnis genommen werden sollte.

Bei der öffentlichen Vorstellungen nannte der Jerusalemer Jesuit P. David Neuhaus den Text wichtig, mutig, kreativ, kurz prophetisch. Wichtig sei der Text, weil er Antisemitismus und das Leid der Palästinenser in Zusammenhang bringe. Mutig sei der Text, weil dieser Diskurs in der palästinensischen Gesellschaft keinesfalls gewollt sei, weil es als Schwäche gesehen werde, wenn man das Leid und die Angst der anderen an sich heranlasse und so den eigentlichen Feind als Menschen wahrnehme. Kreativ sei der Ansatz deswegen, „weil darin das Bild einer Zukunft entworfen wird, in der es keinen Antisemitismus, keinen Rassismus, keine Islamophobie, aber auch keine Besatzung, keine Diskriminierung und keine Gewalt gibt“, sagte Neuhaus.
