„Ceasefire is a step in a journey of a thousand steps, but it is not peace. As I write, the last of the living hostages are reunited with their families while thousands of former prisoners are bussed from life sentences in sunless dungeons to the wreckage and rubble of Gaza. They, too, might reunite with their families—starved, emaciated, evicted, but breathing—all praise to God. I watched one former prisoner reunite with his young children whom he’d been tortured to believe were dead, and another rock back and forth on his knees with a bracelet he’d woven for his daughter clutched in his hands as he wailed, “My family is dead, my family is dead… my home, my children, everything is gone… my family is dead.”

As the story of a conquering „peace“ gains traction, trumpeted by those who personally stand to gain power, prestige, and payment, let the courage of activists such as Sulaiman and Avner, Rana and Eszter remind us not to look away. “Don’t talk about us without us,” Rana reminds us. “If you want to be part of the solution, you need to hear all the voices of people involved and affected by that conflict. And we need to be part of the discussion whether you agree or not. Everybody who lives here needs to be involved in the peace process.”
„Peace“ is not dictated into being, but grown, a fragile seed planted in hope of a future safe enough for it to flourish.

Key Words for the Study of the Arabic Literary and Manuscript Tradition

kalimat in Arabic means ‚words‘; the Acronym stands for “Key Words for the Study of the Arabic Literary and Manuscript Tradition” (in Arabic: كلمات مفتاحية لدراسات المخطوطات والنصوص الأدبية في التراث العربي).

kalimat is the first online handbook of Arabic literature from the pre-modern and early modern periods. The new publication format promotes Arabic and English as the two languages of academic research and learning in the field.

Thus, all articles are to be published in both Arabic and English, just as the platform is bilingual in all its functionalities. Both the editorial workflows, the editing and incremental publication of the articles will be facilitated by the open source software Open Encyclopedia System (OES) engineered by the project partner FUB-IT at the Freie Universität Berlin directed by Brigitte Grote. The entire platform is published in open access. 

kalimat consists of short articles that translate Arabic literary concepts into modern usage, as well as analyze and contextualize them in specified corpora. The main goal of kalimat is to emphasize the complexity and multi-layered semantic nature of literature as a meta-concept. Another goal is to account for the polysemy and mutability of the rich repertoire of Arabic literary concepts. The terms and concepts to be included in our living handbook will bring together research in philology and literary and intellectual history as well as cultural studies and are drawn from the fields of literary genres and institutions, literary theory including poetics, rhetoric, and linguistics, literary ethics (adab), as well as textual practices.

The kalimat project and editorial team at Freie Universität Berlin under the academic lead of Johannes Stephan are hosting a pilot project in Arabic Digital Humanities to facilitate access to the latest academic research in the field, promote young academics and their contributions and to open the floor for new readings of literary concepts in the Arabic tradition.

Mit Kunst und Kultur wird in Berlin (und anderenorts?) ein Fest der arabischen Sprache gefeiert: Am 18. Dezember 1973 wurde Arabisch als eine der sechs offiziellen Amtssprachen der Vereinten Nationen anerkannt.

Offener Brief: Solidarität mit Sophie von der Tann!

77 Unterzeichnende finden sich (aktuell 5.12.25) unter einem Offenen Brief, in dem es unter anderen heißt:

Internationale Journalistinnen und Journalisten erleben Angriffe besonders in den sozialen Medien. Dort werden Shitstorms inszeniert, die z.T. durch Bots Reichweite,bekommen sollen. Große Aufmerksamkeit erregen diese Kampagnen, wenn sie von realen Akteuren getrieben sind, die ihre Legitimität aus öffentlichen Ämtern ziehen.

So hat ein Reserve-Sprecher der israelischen Armee unter anderem den SPIEGEL mit dem antisemitischen NS-Hetzblatt „Der Stürmer“ gleichgesetzt und die ARD als „Sprachrohr der Hamas“ bezeichnet. Sophie von der Tann hat er mehrmals besonders heftig attackiert, vergangene Woche schrieb er auf X, sie sei „das Gesicht von neu-deutschem Juden- und Israelhass“: Ein Vorwurf, der geeignet ist, die Kollegin verächtlich zu machen. Der israelische Botschafter in Deutschland hatte ihr bei X vor Monaten bereits einen Jobwechsel empfohlen und sie als „Aktivistin“ bezeichnet. Äußerungen wie diese werden von Interessenverbänden und bestimmten Medien aufgegriffen, aufgebauscht und verbreitet.

Gegen die Verleihung des renommierten Hanns-Joachim-Friedrichs-Preises an Sophie von der Tann in dieser Woche läuft eine eigens organisierte Kampagne, etwa mit Beiträgen in sozialen Medien sowie der Ankündigung einer Mahnwache.

Solche Angriffe bedrohen den Kern dessen, was Journalismus leisten muss: Dass sich Menschen auf Basis von professionell recherchierten, angemessen kritischen Berichten ihre Meinung bilden können. Das ist auch eine Gefahr für die Demokratie

Givat Haviva (GH) is one of Israel’s largest and oldest centers for Jewish-Arab encounters.

Founded in 1949 and named after resistance fighter Haviva Reik, the organization has worked for 75 years to promote a peaceful, democraticshared society between Arab and Jewish citizens of Israeli, grounded in equality.

The GH campus houses the Jewish-Arab Center for Peace (JACP), an arts and language center, archives, a research institute, an international school, and other facilities. Each year, over 30,000 people visit the campus to take part in educational and community-building programs.

Micha Brumlik (1947-2025) Z“l

Im Alter von 78 Jahren ist am 10. November Prof. em. Dr. Micha Brumlik gestorben. Er war von 2000 bis 2005 Direktor des Fritz Bauer Instituts in Frankfurt/Main und von 2000 bis 2013 dort suv Universitätsprofessor. Geboren 1947 im schweizerischen Davos, Sohn jüdischer Eltern, die während der NS-Zeit verfolgt wurden. Er engagierte sich zeitweise bei den Grünen.

Immer wieder hat er sich kritisch und engagiert in der Debatte um das Verhältnis Deutschland-Israel-Palästina, aber auch zum jüdisch-christlichen Verhältnis und zu den Beziehungen zum Islam zu Wort gemeldet. Erinnert sei hier an seine Mitarbeit an der Entstehung und Propagierung der Jerusalem Deklaration zum Antisemitimus, zu der er auch beim diAk Rede und Antwort stand.
