As violence escalates and uncertainty grows, we remain steadfast in our commitment to nonviolence and to one another. Many CfP members remain in Paris for the Civil Society convening and are, for now, unable to return home. All of our members are safe, and those in the land are preparing for what may come next. Please keep the all those suffering and in fear in your thoughts and please join us on Monday for a time of connection.
This Monday, we invite you to leave your table empty, as an act of love, grief, and nonviolent co-resistance. This fast is made even more important by the recent news – let’s unite in every way possible to care for those in the land and call out for peace.
On June 16th at 12:00pm ET, while many of us are fasting, join AFCFP and our partners for a sacred hour of reflection, witness, and activism. Our gathering will be facilitated by three leaders from diverse traditions and will include a time for participants to connect with one another. We will use our bodies and voices to call for an end to the forcible starvation of those in Gaza and to affirm that our lives are intertwined.

Die Reihe der stillen Demonstranten in Israel, die jeden Samstag am Rande der großen Antiregierungskundgebung Bilder von in Gaza getöteten Kinder in der Hand halten, will nicht aufhören. Unter ihnen Künstler wie Addam Yekutieli. Sie kommen mit einem Appell an ihr Land und ihre Regierung: Bewahrt die Menschlichkeit! Verschließt nicht die Augen vor dem Leid und der Trauer auch der anderen Seite – der palästinensischen Zivilisten in Gaza!
„Das Massaker des 7. Oktobers war ohne jeden Zweifel ein grauenhafter Einschnitt in unsere Gesellschaft“, sagt Yekutieli, der unter dem Alias Know Hope arbeitet. „Es traf uns in unserer tiefsten rohen, unterbewussten Psyche. Das Problem ist, dass in diesem Krieg das Trauma als Waffe eingesetzt wurde. Die andere Seite wird schlicht dehumanisiert. Vielleicht kennen die Leute die Opferzahlen in Gaza, aber sie sagen sich: ‚Na und? Es sind doch nur Palästinenser.‘ Unsere Aufgabe ist es jetzt, die humanistischen Werte hochzuhalten.“
Es sind nicht nur Ultralinke, die ein Ende des Krieges in Gaza fordern. Immer mehr begreifen, dass Israel zum „Pariah“ der Staatengemeinschaft wird, wie die Tageszeitung „Haaretz“ neulich titelte. In einem Meinungsartikel schrieb dort der ehemalige Ministerpräsident Ehud Olmert: „Es gibt zu viele Fälle von der grausamen Erschießungen von Zivilisten, von Zerstörung von Eigentum und Häusern. Israelis begehen Kriegsverbrechen.“ Der ehemalige Armeechef Moshe Yaalon beschuldigt die Netanyahu-Regierung, ethnische Säuberung zu betreiben. Der neue Parteichef der Arbeiterpartei, der Ex-General Yair Golan, sorgte für einen Skandal, als er offen sagte, Israel würde als Hobby Kinder töten. Worte, die noch vor ein paar Wochen undenkbar gewesen wären.
120.000 Reservisten der Armee haben die Regierung zu einem Waffenstillstand aufgerufen. Den Ball ins Rollen gebracht hat Uri Arad, ehemaliger Kampfpilot mit einem offenen Brief der Luftwaffenreservisten. „Die Regierung versucht uns Märchen zu erzählen, wie dass nur militärischer Druck unsere Geiseln in Gaza zurückbringen würde. 41 von ihnen sind bereits in der Geiselhaft gestorben“, sagt er. „Beendet den Krieg und bringt die Geiseln nachhause!“ Der offene Brief der Piloten war nur der erste. Es folgten Aufrufe der Fallschirmjäger, der Infanterie, der Ärzte und der Sanitäter.
Bringt Israels Kriegsführung das Land ins internationale Aus? Der Publizist Ben Dror Yamini sieht eine akute Gefahr. Doch Schuld daran, meint er, seien auch die internationalen Medien, die zunehmend Israel dämonisieren, während sie deren terroristische Gegner ignorieren. „Warum um Himmels willen, diese Doppelmoral?“, klagt er an. „Warum erzählt Ihr nicht die wahre Geschichte der Hamas? Eine Organisation, die mit deutlichsten Worten zur Vernichtung von Juden aufruft, zur muslimischen Weltherrschaft. Die Hamas war der IS bevor es den IS gab. All das zeigt man in den internationalen Medien nicht. Das muss gesagt werden! Andererseits heißt das nicht, dass ihr ausländischen Journalisten nicht das Vorgehen der israelischen Regierung kritisieren sollt.“

Academics for Israeli Democracy
We, members of the academic and administrative staff in institutions of higher
education in Israel, call on you to act immediately to mobilize the full weight of
Israeli academia to stop the Israeli war in Gaza.
Israeli higher education institutions play a central role in the struggle against the
judicial overhaul. It is precisely against this backdrop that their silence in the face of
the killing, starvation, and destruction in Gaza, and in the face of the complete
elimination of the educational system there, its people, and its structures, is so striking.
Since Israel violated the ceasefire on March 18, almost 3,000 people have been killed in
Gaza. The vast majority of them were civilians. Since the start of the war, at least
53,000 people have been killed in Gaza, including at least 15,000 children and at least 41
Israeli hostages. At the same time, many international bodies are warning of acute
starvation – the result of intentional and openly declared Israeli government policy – as
well as of the rendering of Gaza into an area unfit for human habitation. Israel
continues to bomb hospitals, schools, and other institutions. Among the war’s declared
goals, as defined in the orders for the current military operation “Gideon’s Chariots,” is
the “concentration and displacement of the population.” This is a horrifying litany of
war crimes and even crimes against humanity, all of our own doing.
As academics, we recognize our own role in these crimes. It is human societies, not
just governments, that commit crimes against humanity. Some do so by means of
direct violence. Others do so by sanctioning the crimes and justifying them, before and
after the fact, and by keeping quiet and silencing voices in the halls of learning. It is
this bond of silence that allows clearly evident crimes to continue unabated without
penetrating the barriers of recognition.
We cannot claim that we did not know. We have been silent for too long. For the sake
of the lives of innocents and the safety of all the people of this land, Palestinians and
Jews; for the sake of the return of the hostages; if we do not call to halt the war
immediately, history will not forgive us. We will not forgive ourselves. It is our duty to
act to stop the slaughter; it is our duty to save lives. It is our duty to save what can still
be saved of this land’s future. The institutions of higher education in Israel must raise
their voices, address their students and the public at large, look at reality directly and
call things what they are – unspeakable actions being done in our name, with our own
hands, that will ultimately result in destroying higher education in Israel and the entire
society from within.

Marsch der Konfessionen in Jerusalem
600 Tage nach Beginn des Gaza-Kriegs sind Vertreter verschiedener Religionen am Mittwoch von der Jerusalemer Innenstadt in Richtung Altstadt gezogen. Das Motto der Demonstration lautete: Frieden ist der Weg, und am besten geht man ihn gemeinsam.
Gewidmet war die dritte Ausgabe des interreligiösen Marsches der israelischen Friedensaktivistin Vivian Silver, die am 7. Oktober 2023 von der Hamas ermordet worden ist. Er war als Gegenpol zum nationalistisch aufgeladenen und oft gewalttätigen Flaggenmarsch am sogenannten Jerusalem-Tag entstanden, der in diesem Jahr auf den 26. Mai fiel.

Zu den Teilnehmer:innen gehörte auch der deutsche Botschafter in Tel Aviv, Steffen Seibert und Ines Fischer, Pfarrerin der deutschsprachigen lutherischen Gemeinde in Jerusalem, sie sagte gegenüber der Nachrichtenagentur KNA.„Es ist so wichtig, dass Menschen zusammen für die Gottebenbildlichkeit auf die Straße gehen – und schön, daß es geht“.

You’re invited to a 40-day fast for Gaza, organized by Veterans For Peace. On May 22, we begin our fasting across the country while demanding:
1) a resumption of humanitarian aid, under UN authority, to Gaza
2) that the U.S. stop arming Israel NOW!
Join us in our work! We imagine two fasting options: a centralized fasting location in NYC where fasters will commit to 250 calories a day, in line with the general caloric intake of Gazans under the ongoing Israeli military blockade, and a dispersed fasting option for folks to join the work from their local context. This action is open to all Gaza allies and people of good conscience who want an end to the genocide in Gaza, veteran or not. Our fast launches as the UN warns the death of 15000 infants is imminent. Join us as we resist this genocide!
